Paraphillia: The Dragon from Down Below
Chapter 2
Higante Island and the Coal-Devils

Riding on a boat on the way to Higante Island with Fregata, Gale gazes up to the skies, still wondering what Higante Island exactly is. As the boat is getting further, its destination is already getting visible, an overall mountainous place. When it starts to get closer to the shore, Fregata spotted Gale near the end of the boat. “Hey, Gale!” Fregata shouted as she managed to get Gale’s attention, “We’re here!” The boat slowed down and stopped at the dock, connecting to a small city.

The two jumped out of the boat and started to explore the city. Gale notices a big sign near the entrance between the dock and the city itself. The sign, however, is covered in a strange symbol, but Gale manages to make out what it says, it’s known as Bradberry City. Gale quickly finished reading it and tries to remember further about Higante Island, “Hmm… I really thing I’ve been here before. The name sounded so familiar.”

“What are you babbling about, Gale?” Fregata said as she overheard Gale talking to himself.

“Well, it’s just that this place gives me a familiar presence like I’ve visited this before,” Gale said, “I’m gathering some information for my memories, that’s all.”

“Rrrright,” Fregata said casually, “You know, since we’re here, we can gather info of the place as we explore. We still need to deal with the miners and know what their plans are in this place.”

“Oh! Um, sorry,” Gale said embarrassed, “I almost forgot why we’re here in the first place. I think I’ve been trying to remember this place too much.” Gale made a short, awkward laugh and sighed, “All right, let’s go.”

The two proceeded in the small city as they’re looking for answers. While exploring they saw some strange symbols written all over the buildings, including the windows and even the ground. “Gee, what happened to this place,” Fregata commented. Oddly enough, the citizens are acting like nothing happen, though Gale and Fregata did see fear in few of the citizens’ eyes, as if they want to ignore what happened.

Just then, they saw a familiar looking creature holding a variety of mining equipment; the same jackalope-like creature who’s wearing a miner uniform. “Hey, that guy must be one of those miners-,” Gale pointed out. Just when he finished his sentence, Fregata quickly ran and pins the miner to the ground.

“Ow! Hey, let go of me!” the miner said as he struggles, “What do you want from me?”

“What’s going on?!” Fregata said angrily, “What’s with the signs?! What’s going on with the people!?”.

“Fregata, please let go of him. I want to talk to him,” Gale commanded, causing Fregata to sigh and brings the miner up to his feet. The miner, actually scared after Fregata just pounced him with no warning, is almost beginning to distrust Gale. However, Gale deciding to keep calm, not wanting to scare him further and likely would run away if he does otherwise, “I do apologize what Fregata just did. We just had problems with your partners, Mr…”.

“Call me Joris, and I’m not one of those guys. I’m actually working for another group,” the miner said, “Though, I am really sorry for you guys, but that’s what a lot of the Coal-Devils are.”

“Coal-Devils?” Gale questioned.

“Ah, so you must be new here. Well, the Coal-Devils is a rioting mining company full of Wolpers, the creature that I am, too. They’ve been actually pestering this city for quite a while, if you haven’t noticed what happened to the city. Just recently, we found some pretty neat diamonds deep in the Rhedo Mountains. But alas, they managed to kick the company I work for out of that place and pretty much marked the nearby city as their territory,” said Joris as he points at the large mountains.

“That sounds awful,” Gale said.

“Yep, most of the diamonds are shown to be very stuck in high places in the interior, so they were testing the firecracker cannons and are currently at the mountains, at least since I saw some of them leave to the path to the mountains… Wait… you arrived here because they tested that in your home, right?” Gale and Fregata nodded, giving a concerned and somewhat angry look respectively. “Ah… you’re not thinking of going up to those guys, right? Those guys are such rough people” Joris said.

“Actually, we did in fact have that in our mind, but don’t worry, we’ve been through several situations worse than these guys,” Fregata said, “So, leave it to us!”

“Really? Thanks! Maybe then this city would go back into a more peaceful state after these guys get their hands off of it,” Joris said as he turns away. Just before he actually walks away, he tells the two one more thing, “Well, I gotta go now, gonna hang out with my pals at one of the restaurants, including my boss. Speaking of bosses, that’s one person of the Coal-Devils that you wouldn’t want to meet. She’s even worse than most of the members.” Joris than walks away, moving behind one of the buildings, out of Gale and Fregata’s sight.

“What a nice guy,” Gale said. He turned his view at the large mountains, looking at them with a determined look, “At the Rheddo Mountains…”

Fregata looks determined as well and clenches her fists, “So… shall we hop to it?” Gale nodded in response. Gale flew and Fregata ran at the same speed to get to the city’s exit to the mountains. As the two are almost to the exit, Gale overheard a man talking with two other men, “Then the monster of the mountains almost got me!”

Gale suddenly stopped, with Fregata still running, “This feeling… How did that give me that feeling?”. Out of curiosity for the sake of his possible memories of Higante Island, Gale then approached to the men, “Excuse me, what is this monster you speak of?”
